Unusual Furniture

This vanity top was made out of a specially imported block of 100mm thick Thassos marble, which was then templated and fluted, as illustrated in the picture above, for a flat in Sloane Street. The vanity cupboard it sat on had elaborate detailing with lions' head columns. We had to make it in such a way that it could take the huge weight of the marble. We also advised our client to have the floor checked by a structural engineer.
Tim Wood was commissioned to design a bell stand to take twenty-two bells in ascending sizes, which could be wheeled out on special occasions from under a grand staircase in a house in Scotland. We also incorporated the sunflower motif on both sides of the bell stand and the acorns on the three high points, both of which originate from the family crest.

The castle cupboard was originally designed and hand made by Tim Wood himself as a speculative piece for loan to "The Design and Decoration Building" set up by Robin Guild and Fleur Rossdale as a permanent show, by invitation only, to showcase the very best in design and decoration in 1991. Since then the castle cupboard has been displayed at Decorex, 100% Design and Grand Designs London. It is made of solid English limed oak, with forty-four window openings, some glazed with mitred beading and the others left open. The castle cupboard stands on one block, cut into five pieces of Purbeck stone the same material as used on Corfe Castle. The inside has glass shelves illuminated from above. Tim Wood now uses this castle cupboard as a drinks cupboard.

This hi-fi cupboard was designed and made in a Moroccan style with holly handles, Brazilian mahogany framework, pommele douka and thuya burr veneered detailing. The inside has wire management for the hi-fi equipment, good ventilation and storage for cds in the drawers.

This cupboard was designed by David Bristow and Mick Nash of Sedley Place Design in collaboration with Tim Wood, for a well known film director's house in London to complement the house's 1930's look with a modern twist. The cupboard is made in a traditional manner with three sliding doors all framed in maple with European oak moulding detail and centre panels made of birds eye maple. The ball feet are made of European oak, and the rest of the cupboard has other European oak detailing with the main structure being made in maple. The interior is made in cedar of Lebanon with drawers and adjustable shelves.
This Apothecary chest was designed and made by Tim Wood in co-ordination with Dido Farrell of Dido Farrell Designs for the Chairman of Glaxo Smith Kline. It was designed as a showpiece for his office at Glaxo Smith Kline. The chest is made of French polished Brazilian mahogany, with each drawer hand dovetailed and fitted precisely into its own numbered opening. All forty-two drawers have hand turned individually made wedge fixed knobs. All the forty-two labels on the drawers were names given by Glaxo Smith Kline's Chairman to illustrate their products. All the lettering was hand painted by Wood and Wood International Signs Limited onto forty-two Brazilian mahogany plates.
This cupboard housing dogs below was comissioned by Robert Stigwood for Barton Manor, the old Home farm to Osbourne House, Queen Victoria's home on the Isle of Wight. Tim Wood designed the kitchen and pantry in a traditional English style and this cupboard was part of the pantry. The grooving at the base of the cupboard, below the dogs, was to allow ventilation from the boiler that was situated just behind this cupboard. We also supplied Robert Stigwood with items for all five bathrooms.

Luxurious materials

The types of wood that Tim Wood uses range from the traditional such as oak, maple, mahogany, sycamore and lignum vitae to the more unusual satinwood, zebrano and snakewood. All the timber comes from sustainable sources in either Europe or further afield. Tim Wood works with leather, precious metals and stones too, mixing materials to create unique statement pieces. For instance, a dining room table with an American black walnut veneered top, laser-cut metal construction base and ebony stringing. Another example of an imaginative mix of materials is a bespoke kitchen made for one client: in flamed Brazilian mahogany was mixed with maple and a shivakazi granite worktop to give an exclusive, modern look. Everything is hand-made by Tim Wood's team of forty craftsmen and every project results in a unique bespoke work of art.
